B Flat, the latest US producer to touch down on Sheffield’s Bad Taste Records, is a 21 year old from San Francisco whose Soundcloud states simply: “I’m growing up”. If this is a music-maker who’s currently growing up then it would seem that he’s been raised on a diet of R&B, 808’s, kicks and snares, perfecting the knack of crafting melodic, percussive ruminations in the process of his creative adolescence.

Combining the wide-screen garage angles of Jacques Greene with the down-to-business house sensibilities of Claude Von Stroke, B Flat’s productions are a dizzying array of whirring drum patterns and raucous snare salvos, re-rubbed vocals that loop in reflective waves that often belie the stern beats they ride, and a lingering sense that you’re somehow listening in on something indefinably personal.

This EP contains three B Flat originals; the fizzling, creeping disarmed techno of title track ‘Night Is Over’, the punching ‘Coalescence’ draped with muffled drone and eerie, piercing snatches, and the metronomic digital funeral march of ‘Vacant Affect’. Remixes come courtesy of Bad Taste stalwart Walter Ego, as well as Beaches and Keumel.
