Itoa first caught our ear with the Peng EP in 2013; dancehall infused bass music that favoured the low end with a meticulous attention to space and detail in the mix. The EP even came accompanied with a wonderfully weird kebab munching music video. He then remixed a track for us on the Robokid EP Ur Touch, which picked up support from Toddla T on Radio 1 as well as Earmilk. Itoa also played regular b2b sets with Bad Taste co-founder Lean Low in 2014 so asking him to work with us was a natural progression.
French Cola carries on from where Peng left off, bass heavy bashment vibes with a nod to half time drum ‘n’ bass. The title track is a onslaught of amen breaks with heavy percussion whereas On Top shows a more tropical side where things get even more minimal. Remixes come courtesy of Cosmic Bridge affiliate Moresounds, Berlin based producer She’s Drunk (Liminal Sounds) and Londons own Touchy subject.
“French Cola” is not a drink. French Cola is what you’re drinking when you’re in the right situation, when you feel in a certain way. Not a single situation, not a specific feeling, but always the right ones. It’s many things but it’s never garish, never too much, always just right, always hits the spot.”
